What does the A and K on a character LCD stand for? I know that is how you power the LCDs backlight, but which is positive and which negative?

A is the positive side of the LED https://focuslcds.com/journals/el-backl ... ting-edge/ backlight, K is the negative or ground.
If you reverse the wires/polarity the display will not light up.
Note: LED are the most popular. In the older days, EL was around and provided a nice even light, but there were issues with AC and noise and shorter half-life, so all new designs are now LED.
