Re: What does DPI mean

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch.

This is used in graphic type of displays. The more dots there are per inch, the higher the resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper the image.

The higher the DPI, the more processing power you will need from your processor.

What kind of liquid in LCD?

There are several different types of LCDs. If we narrow it down to monochrome displays, then there are three types of fluids. Here is an article https://focuslcds.com/journals/what-are-the-lcd-fluid-types/ with more details, but below is a quick overview TN (twisted nematic) is the most common fluid...

Re: What is an active display and why is it more expensive?

There are two classes of displays. Active and passive. Most of this time, this is dealing with a TFT https://focuslcds.com/product-category/tft-display/ display. An active display is one where there is one transistor to drive each pixel. This produces a sharper looking display and a faster refresh r...

Re: How much power for a segment display?

Segment displays are one of the lowest power displays on the market. They can operate at under 1mA. As a general rule, they require 20uA per cm^2 The colder the display gets, the more power it will draw. The display will operate a long time on a single AA battery. Adding a backlight to the display w...

Re: What voltage option for a character LCD?

Character LCDs have two input voltages. 3.3V and 5V. 5V is the most popular, but 3.3 is gaining fast. Many people prefer the 3.3 for battery powered applications. Two AA batteries generate 3.3V. 5V operates better at colder temperatures. The colder the environment, the more voltage required. Many 3....

Re: Why negative voltage on old character LCDs?

Older character, segment and monochrome graphic displays required a negative voltage to deal with temperature swings. More power is required to drive a monochrome display as the temperature drops. Newer character displays have a built in circuit with a charge pump (bump circuit) the increases the ou...

Re: What is more common 4 or 5 wire rtp?

There are several different types of resistive touch panel (RTP). The most common is four wire. If you need greater accuracy, then go to five wire. Four wire is the default for most monochrome displays and TFTs. The advantages of resistive touch screen are that is can be activated by any object from...

Re: What happens when segment too hot

A Segment display contains a nematic fluid between two layers of ITO glass. If the fluid gets too cold, it freezes and the display locks up. If the fluid gets to hot, there is a black spot that appears on the screen. The black spot will go away once the display cools off. It is helpful to run air (u...
