Re: Can I turn off the backlight and keep the LCD on?

Yes, backlights on: character, mono graphic and segment displays are independent of the LCD driving voltage. The ability to turn off the LED will save battery life. In many cases, the backlight will draw more power than the LCD.

As a general rule, each LED requires 15mA. It is possible to overdrive this to make it brighter, but this will shorten its half life.

Re: Is the A and K the only place to power the backlight?

No, A and K are not the only place to add power to backlight on a LCD. Many character LCDs have pin 1 and pin 2 connected to A and K. So choose what is best for your new design.

Yes, it is possible to use pins instead of a FPC cable for a segment LCD using a spi interface, but not recommend. We suggest the fpc cable.

Re: Is all the glass area of a segment display active?

No, not all the glass can be used to display a segment. There is a dead area of about 1mm all the way around the glass where the pins make connection with the ITO glass. Also, this is the area that is used for the bezel to hold the display to a PCB.

Re: Do LCDs need negative voltage

It is not common for a character LCD to require a negative voltage. Years ago it was necessary to handle colder temperatures, but current TN fluids have removed the need for negative reference voltages.
