Re: which type of backlight can generate EMI
The two types of backlights that generate EMI or noise or interferance are: EL (Electroluminescence) and CCFL. Both of these have been phased out on monochrome displays such as: Segment, Character and Graphics. The main reason they have gone away is that they are AC driven which creates noise and ha...

Re: What is a LED half-life
Half-life is the amount of time before the LED (LED backlight) will be half or 50% as bright as when it was first turned on. This is not the amount of time for it to burn out. Standard half-lilfes for LEDs range from 50K hours to 70K hours. The lower the current, the longer the half-life. EL backlig...

Re: is it possible to order a graphics displays with a CCFL backlight
It is very difficult to order any display with a CCFL backlight. CCFL ( cold-cathode fluorescent lamps backlights) have been discontinued for a few reasons. The main one is that they are hard on the environment. Also, they have a short life time and use AC power which generates noise. We do not reco...

Re: which display is best for a handheld monitoring device
The best LCD technology for any handheld product is one that uses very little power so that batteries can last a long time. Displays with the lowest power requirements are ones without a backlight, since the backlight can draw 10X more power than just the LCD. Examples of these include: Character, m...

Re: How bright does a TFT need to be for direct sunlight
The majority of TFTs have a transmissive polarizer that provides a bright backlight, but does not perform well in direct sunlight.
The best option is to increase the brightness of the display to 700 nits or brighter. A nit is the amount of light produced by one candle.

Re: Is there a 2" TFT available?
There is no standard 2" TFT. The two closest sizes are a 1.8" and a 2.4"
The tooling cost (or NRE) to custom build a TFT runs over $100K and has high MOQs. it is not a good option for most designs by OEMs.

Re: How long does a LED backlight last?
LED backlights, as used on Character, Segment and graphic displays, are measured in half-life. The half-life is how many hours it is on before it is half as bright or at 50% brightness. The lower the driving current of the LED backlight, the longer the half life. Halflife is not the amount of time b...
