I need to build a handheld monitoring device that runs on AA batteries. So long battery like is key. What is the best LCD technology for long battery life?

The displays with the lowest power drain (best for batteries) are LCDs without backlights that have a reflective polarizer. This includes monochrome character, Graphic and segment. Most can operate on as little as 1mA of current without the LED backlight.

The best LCD technology for any handheld product is one that uses very little power so that batteries can last a long time.

Displays with the lowest power requirements are ones without a backlight, since the backlight can draw 10X more power than just the LCD.

Examples of these include: Character, monochrome graphic and Segmented displays.
