Can I adjust the contrast of the monochrome LCD through software, or do I need a pot added to the circuit to do it manually?

Contrast is the difference between the LCD's max supply voltage (5V or 3.3V for character and segment LCDs) and ground. This can be controlled through a pot and done by hand or through the microprocessor you choose to control your LCD's contrast.
