What is better for segment LCD: spi or 4:1

What is a better interface for a segment LCD?
SPI and 4:1 is both good. one is not better than the other.
4:1 is lower cost, but cannot drive as many segments
SPI requires a controller/driver chip that increases its cost, but allows more segments to be driven and at a faster refresh rate than 4:1.
