How much power for a segment display?

What voltage and current are necessary to drive a segment display?
Segment displays are one of the lowest power displays on the market. They can operate at under 1mA. As a general rule, they require 20uA per cm^2
The colder the display gets, the more power it will draw. The display will operate a long time on a single AA battery.
Adding a backlight to the display will increase the power by 10x or greater.
