What causes a segment LCD display to flicker?????

Most Segment displays use a 4:1 mux or a 1:1 mux. If the frequency is not optimized, it will flicker. Segment displays have a refresh rate of around 25%.

Some segment displays have a spi or I2C interface which monitor the refresh rate and avoids the flicker.
