A segment display https://focuslcds.com/segment-lcd/ is a monochrome (single color) display that can display any number, some letters and custom icons.

It is built with two pieces of ITO glass with a fluid between them. As with all fluids, once it gets colder, it slows down the response time and will freeze up.

When it freezes, the segments stop working. If it gets too cold, the liquid will expand and break the glass.

If the display freezes, but not breaks, the display will resume working once the temperature rises.

It is possible to add a heater or a series of resistors to generate enough heat to keep it warm.

If power is a concern (it runs on batteries), you can insulate the display to retain warmth.
