Yes and no. Bistable is great if your display is not changing very often. It requires power for every change, but no power if it holds the same value for a long time such as a price tag at a shoe store. Also, bistable is more expensive.



If you need a low power LCD that does change, or cost is a concern, then a segment LCD<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven-segment_display> is the best option. It draws less than 1mA without a backlight and is simple to program.



They are custom built to the size and segments you need, but the tooling cost is low.
