Is a SPI interace on a segment LCD more expensive than 4:1?
Is it more expensive to build a custom segment LCD with a spi interface?

Yes, on a segment LCD. SPI requires a chip to be added and increases the cost by about $1. 4:1 mux means that there is four segments tied to one I/O pin
