Can a segment LCD have a SPI interface

Is it possible to build a segment display with a SPI interface? or is it a multiplex only?

Yes, it is possible to have an SPI interface

the lowest cost segment option is a 4:1, but requires many more I/Os than a 4:1.
A SPI requires a chip to be added to the LCD increasing the cost and the over all size of the glass.
