The LCD backlight. The backlight (most are LED) can draw up to 10 times the amount of power that LCD logic requires. LEDs can draw as little as 15mA, but when you have several LEDs combined to illuminate a larger LCD, the current can reach or exceed 100mA.

LCD (monochrome) without the backlight can operate on 1mA or less. If you need a backlight or nigh time operation and your product is battery operated, have the backlight turn off or dim when not in use.
