Is there any other type of LCD that can be used that looks like a VFD?

Yes. VFD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_fl ... nt_display) have been around for 50 or 60 years and are still used thanks to their brightness and sharp contrast. Many new designs have switched to technologies such as UWVD <https://focuslcds.com/journals/uwvd-dis ... ound-lcds/> and negative mode FSTNS
