How do you adjust brightness of a LED backlight?

On a character LCD, how to you adjust the brightness of the LED backlight?

LED backlights are DC (Direct current) and their brightness can be adjusted by adjusting the current flow. This is done through changing the value of the resistor. Note: The brighter the backlight, the shorter it's half-life.
