what is the difference between positive and Negative mode?

What is the difference between positive and Negative mode LCDs? What are the advantages of each? Is there a lead time difference?

Positive mode means the background is a lighter color (such as yellow/green or white) while the letter/numbers/icons are a darker color.
Negative mode is just the opposite. A negative mode display must have the backlight on for it to be readable, not always the best option for a battery powered product.
