Is it possible to increase the brightness of the LED back light on Character LCDs? How bright can it go?

Yes, there are a few methods to increase the brightness on a character LCD.

1. Use a transmiffive polarizer. This allows more light to pass through the front glass. The down side is that the backlight needs to be on to read the display. Not always a good option for a battery powered product.
2. Reduce the value of the current limiting resistor. Character displays have a resistor that limits the current, the lower the value of this resistor, the brighter the backlight. The downside to this is that it draws more current and shortens the life of the LED backlight.
Normally the half-life a LED backlight will last around 70K hours at normal current.
