Do all character LCDs contain a LED backlight?

Do all characer LCDs contain a backlight or is it an option? Also, can you turn on the LCD without the backlight being turned on?

No, not all character LCDs contain a LED back light. It is possible to order with or without. The cost difference is around .70/each.
