Can I turn off the backlight and keep the LCD on?

On a character LCD, can I turn off the backlight, but keep the display running?

Yes, backlights on: character, mono graphic and segment displays are independent of the LCD driving voltage. The ability to turn off the LED will save battery life. In many cases, the backlight will draw more power than the LCD.
