Is it possible to make the LED backlight attached to a character LCD brighter?

Yes, Character LCDs can be made brighter a few different ways.
one is to use a transmissive polarizer.
Another is to increase the LED's driving current by reducing the current limiting resistor. Note: The higher the current, the shorter the segments half-life.
