An active display is one where there is one transistor to drive each pixel. This produces a sharper looking display and a faster refresh rate. The pixel is either on 100% or off 100%. The down side is a higher cost.
A passive display is one where there is one transistor for several pixels. The pixels are refreshed at a set rate (also called a duty cycle). The higher the duty cycle, the sharper the image.
Passive displays are less cost.
