Older cell phones used a transmissive TFT, newer phones use transflective TFT or OLED.

Transmissive is less expensive, but is difficult to read in sunlight. It is possible to increase the brightness of the display to compete with the sun, but that drains the battery.
transflective reflects some of the sunlight back toward the user and makes it easier to read.
