How bright does the TFT display need to be for sunlight readability?

The majority of TFTs have a transmissive polarizer that provides a bright backlight, but does not perform well in direct sunlight.
The best option is to increase the brightness of the display to 700 nits or brighter. A nit is the amount of light produced by one candle.
