Can you build a graphics LCD with a removable LED backlight or have a large gap between the LCD and the backlight?

Yes, it is possible to build a character, graphics or segment LCD with a separate LED backlight. This is not a common practice but might be a good idea if your LCD is on 24/7 for years and the LEDs start to fade due to half-life.
