Display format tells how many dots or characters exit on an LCD.

The display format for a character LCD https://focuslcds.com/product-category/character-lcd/ is the number of characters per row times the number of rows. An example is a 16x2 which means there are sixteen characters on each row and two rows for a total of 32 characters.

On a Graphic display, it is the number of dots in the 'x' direction and the number of dots in the 'y' direction. An example is 128x64.
