what is the difference between LED and CCFL backlights

What is the difference between CCFL and LED backlights. Which one is better for new designs.

There is a big difference between LED and CCFL.

LED is DC (Direct Current) driven and does not generate the noise and EMI like CCFL.
Also, LED backlights have a half-life of 70K hours compared to the 3K of CCFL.

CCFL is close to impossible to locate for new product designs.

LED backlights, as used on Character, Segment and graphic displays, are measured in half-life.
The half-life is how many hours it is on before it is half as bright or at 50 brightness.
The lower the driving current of the LED backlight, the longer the half life.

Halflife is not the amount of time before it burns out.
