What is the difference between a CCFL and LED backlight

What are the advantages and disadvantages of CCFL and LED backlights?
CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) is an older LCD backlight technology. They are nearly impossible to purchase since they have lead and other nasty materials.
Also, they were AC driven, which produced noise and they had a short half-life of 3K hours.
