how bright does a LED need to be to be sunlight readable?

How bright does the backlight of a LCD need to be for it to be bright enough to read in direct sunlight?

As a general rule, displays need to be 700 nits or brighter to operate in the sun. A nit is the amount of light produced by one candle.
